The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts on Tuesday said activists of BNP, Islami Chhatra Shibir and UPDF under the leadership of former BNP lawmaker Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan committed the loathsome crime in hills at the instigation of a foreign intelligence agency.

"Wearing helmet, they took part in the terrorist activities in the CHT," said committee chairman Advocate Shah Alam at a press briefing at the JS media centre Tuesday afternoon. The committee got this information during its visit to the places of occurrence, he said after a meeting of the committee.

On queries, Advocate Shah Alam said a vested quarter carried out the terrorist activities in the CHT to destabilise the government and also to prove the present democratic administration a failure case.

He said Bangalee and indigenous people have been living in the CHT peacefully and they also want to maintain the peaceful coexistence.

"Recommendations will be made to the prime minister on behalf of the committee to make more active the law-enforcement agencies as well as the administration so that the Bangalee and the ethnic people can live together in the CHT peacefully," he said.

Committee members ABM Fazley Karim Chowdhury, Gias Uddin Ahmed, KM Khalid Mahmud and Jatindra Lal Tripura were present at the meeting held at the parliament building.

Fazley Karim Chowdhury said the government rehabilitation programme was launched for the affected people within 24 hours of the incident, which is the first in the CHT region.

"The committee will put forward recommendations to the government to provide food assistance to the affected people for nine months instead of three months through VGF cards," Chowdhury said.

He also said that recommendations will also be made for giving punishment to those involved in creating unstable situation in the CHT.

The committee visited the areas of Rangamati and Khagrachhari on March 6 which were affected during the February 19-23 violence.
